Vaccines - What’s Required in NC

Vaccines have become a controversial subject and I encourage all parents to do their homework when making decisions about vaccinations for their children.  I’m often asked what are the mandated vaccinations in North Carolina.  The North Carolina Statues website has a lot of helpful information about mandated vaccines.  From G.S. 130A-152 § 130A-152. Immunization required:

“Every child present in this State shall be immunized against diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, poliomyelitis, red measles (rubeola) and rubella. In addition, every child present in this State shall be immunized against any other disease upon a determination by the Commission that the immunization is in the interest of the public health. Every parent, guardian, person in loco parentis and person or agency, whether governmental or private, with legal custody of a child shall have the responsibility to ensure that the child has received the required immunization at the age required by the Commission. If a child has not received the required immunizations by the specified age, the responsible person shall obtain the required immunization for the child as soon as possible after the lack of the required immunization is determined.”

Secondhand Smoke During & After Pregnancy

Lately I’m noticing that more and more pregnant moms are concerned about the impact of secondhand smoke on their unborn babies.  This can be a really tricky subject, especially if you have relatives who smoke.  While you may be able to avoid the secondhand smoke while you’re pregnant, what happens after the baby is born?  It’s important to decide on your “policy” about smokers interacting with your baby before the baby is born and to communicate this to the smokers in your life.

From the US Environmental Protection Agency website:

“Children are particularly vulnerable to the effects of secondhand smoke because they are still developing physically, have higher breathing rates than adults, and have little control over their indoor environments. Children exposed to high doses of secondhand smoke, such as those whose mothers smoke, run the greatest relative risk of experiencing damaging health effects.

  • Exposure to secondhand smoke can cause asthma in children who have not previously exhibited symptoms.
  • Exposure to secondhand smoke increases the risk for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
  • Infants and children younger than 6 who are regularly exposed to secondhand smoke are at increased risk of lower respiratory track infections, such as pneumonia and bronchitis.
  • Children who regularly breathe secondhand smoke are at increased risk for middle ear infections.”

Additional information about secondhand smoke:

It can be challenging to come up with a plan that works for everyone.  Some ideas we’ve heard are:

  • Letting smokers know why you’re concerned about your baby coming into contact with secondhand smoke, including smoke on clothes
  • Explaining that you want them to be able to hold and spend time with the baby and that you want to work together to make sure everyone’s needs are met
  • Having a shirt for each smoker that you keep at your house and that you are in charge of laundering, have smokers change into the shirt before close contact with the baby

Individual Insurance After C-Section

An article from the New York Times discusses the challenges women may face getting individual insurance after having a c-section…

“When the Golden Rule Insurance Company rejected her application for health coverage last year, Peggy Robertson was mystified.  ”It made no sense,” said Ms. Robertson, 39, who lives in Centennial, Colo. “I’m in perfect health.”

She was turned down because she had given birth by Caesarean section. Having the operation once increases the odds that it will be performed again, and if she became pregnant and needed another Caesarean, Golden Rule did not want to pay for it. A letter from the company explained that if she had been sterilized after the Caesarean, or if she were over 40 and had given birth two or more years before applying, she might have qualified.”   read the whole article…

Tour Guide

In class, we always discuss the idea that as the HypnoBirthing instructors, we are simply the tour guides.  It’s our job to teach you the techniques and answer your questions.  It’s your job to read the HypnoBirthing book, practice the techniques and ask any questions you have.  I wish I could say that you didn’t have to do anything other than just show up for class, but unfortunately it takes more than that.  We want you to be firmly on the “cause” side of the cause-and-effect equation.  This is the place where you feel confident to pursue the birthing experience you desire.

This link will take you to all of the homework assignments for the class, in case you want to get an idea of all that we’ll be covering and when.  Please remember to always call us or email if you have any questions.

Exercise During Pregnancy

It can be difficult to know what kinds of activities are beneficial and safe during pregnancy.  Obviously, the best thing to do is to talk with your health care provider and work out a plan together that takes into account your level of fitness prior to becoming pregnant and your unique health considerations.  Marie Mongan gives some guidelines in her HypnoBirthing book, as well as information about beneficial stretches you can use to prepare for birthing.  If you’re looking for more information about exercising during pregancy, the following links maybe helpful:

Many of the moms in our classes really enjoy taking prenatal yoga classes.  Classes at Family Yoga in Greensboro are mentioned often my these moms as being particularly enjoyable.
